Fever (again!)

Fever is common in the postoperative period. A popular mnemonic that will help you cover your bases when finding a source is the “5 Ws”:

Wind: Atelectasis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism

Water: Urinary tract infection (think Foley catheter!)

Wound (or womb in obstetrics): surgical site infection

Walking: Deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism

Wonder drugs: Drug fever, blood products, line infection
